Taby vs Ziosk Tablets vs Presto Tablets

Ziosk and Presto have been around for quite a while and have established proven value to many publicly owned companies that brag about their return on investment by investing into their products. It is proven that the demand for pay at the table solutions is high and utilization percentages is all you need to see. So why doesn’t every restaurant purchase Ziosk Tablets for all tables?

There are many headaches and costs associated with owning a tablet based pay at the table solution which we will discuss further in this article. In 2019 Taby kicked off an intelligent QR code software that has a unique QR code on each table. When the QR code is scanned the guest’s check appears on their smartphone. With the emergence of the pandemic and popularity of QR codes for a method of contactless payments we now see companies like Ziosk and Presto offering a similar solution. Restaurants are finding that switching to QR codes is more than just a flavor change rather it cuts out a lot of the headache for servers and costs for their restaurants. As we refer to Ziosk and Presto solutions throughout this article we are reffering to their tablet offering. We use Taby instead of QR code because not all QR code solutions provide the same value that Ziosk and Presto deliver. Read why not all QR code solutions are the same here

Taby, Presto and Ziosk are Self Checkout options meaning that they require Zero server setup for the guest to use. This is not the case for most mobile applications on the market today that require a bill to be brought to the table or a code to be linked by the server to the guest’s check.

Both systems capture emails although with Taby it is only one click for the customer to opt into receive marketing updates from that restaurant. Reducing the effort to review and opt in for emails increases the data your restaurant gets.

Last but not least they both generate a 10 minute reduction in the checkout process enabling servers to make more tips in each shift by turning more tables. If you would like to learn why these save 10 minutes per guest you can read more here

Taby does not require the purchase of hardware for each table which is the biggest cost with Ziosk or Presto, not to mention that the hardware needs to be refreshed once every 3-5 years or any time credit card security practices change. There are ways to offset the costs to the restaurant by allowing the tablet vendors to sell games on the tablets to your guests but at the end of the day hardware costs are significant and someone will pay them whether it is you or your guests. If your guests pay for it through games you will end up with multiple bill disputes or complaints as many will claim they didn't know they were being charged.

Taby does not require a dedicated network in the restaurant because it uses your guest’s mobile network to run the app. Tablets will require a dedicated PCI compliant (secure) network to operate. This requires an installation and upkeep costs. Many restaurants have "dead spots" where signal is blocked by metal structure supports or rocks so the servers find themselves constantly re-connecting the tablets.

The installation for Taby is a software only installation meaning that it can be done remotely within 5 minutes, there are no charging stations, switches or networks to install. The manager can assign and swap QR codes directly from the manager portal on any device (smartphone, PC, ipad...).

Tablets get dropped, spilled on or sometimes just break down because they had a bad hair day. When this happens it requires to inspect the tablet and determine if it is covered by warranty or if the restaurant needs to buy a replacement tablet.

Credit card security is a Taby, Ziosk and Presto. Your guests have the comfort of paying with the credit card never leaving their posession. This is assuring as credit card theft always runs in the back of people's minds in full service restaurants. Security costs are lower with Taby because all of the credit card security is updated from a central location, online. Taby uses the same third party security measures used for online payments. Tablets need to have some sort of endpoint protection to ensure they are not being compromised from the tablet or through the network in which it is accessing.

Last of all Taby is ZERO Touch which is not to be confused with contactless payment. Guests still need to touch the tablet to checkout with Ziosk's contactless payment option. With Taby the entire experience is on their smartphone. In the days post-COVID-19 reduced contact in a restaurant has become a key point to look for. Guests are looking for easy to clean environments where they feel comfortable but still have the convenience of self checkout.
